If you could live your life all over again，what would you do differently? I think most people can probably name a few things when they are asked. But in reality, we don’t have second chances, only in the movies they do, so what does that tell you? Don’t do anything that you will regret? Don’t regret the things you did?
This movie, If Only, is about second chance. Ian, the main character of the movie, is a successful young businessman, who is so dedicated to his work and always puts his work ahead of everything, including his beloved long-term girlfriend, Samantha. After a big fight, Samantha is tragically killed in a car accident, but the next day after the tragedy, Ian wakes up in the morning with Samantha lying next to him just like every other day, as everything happened yesterday is just a dream. Ian finds himself being able to foresee what is going to happen that day, so he figures maybe he gets the chance to change his destiny. AND he does.
The story is a bit cliché but not a bad one. It is sad that it has to take a tragedy to make someone realize what is most important in life though. Too bad this kind of wake-up call doesn’t exist in real life, but maybe this movie could be the one for some people, I hope.
There are quite a few films sharing the similar concept: The Family Man is definitely my favorite; The Butterfly Effect is also a good one; Siding Doors is a must-see as well. Compared with those I just mentioned, If Only probably is just the one people would watch when they have nothing better to watch. However, Jennifer Love Hewitt, who plays the girlfriend Samantha, actually portrays the character pretty well and I was very surprised when I learnt that she actually wrote the songs she sings in the movie. I guess I have underestimated her after all these years. Not bad, Jenifer, not bad at all.
